Timber beams can add unique elegance and decoration to your ceiling. In addition, they provide enough warmth, ambiance, and character to the overall décor of your space. In most cases, ceiling beams may not be necessarily used to offer support. Therefore, you can easily install them on a DIY basis.

When considering the installation of timber beams on your ceiling, it is important to know the comfort level needed. You may also tag along a professional to help during the installation process.

Below are tips to help you complete the installation process.

Gather the Right Materials

Whether you are working on an antique type of ceiling or the normal type, it is necessary to have the right tools and materials for the job. Basically, you will need a calibrated measuring tape, tape measure, wood glue, chalk line, scaffolding, ladder, finishing nails, nail gun, hammer, sandpaper and stud finder brackets.

Prep Your Timber Beams

Before the installation is done, you need to allow the timber beams to acclimate to the actual temperature and humid conditions of the room where they are being installed for the best outcome possible. Therefore, it means that your room must have consistent room temperature and humidity for a one-week period prior to installation.

It is advisable to check if your ceiling is strong enough to support the timber beams before installing them. Hence, confirm several aspects of the ceiling such as the studs to ensure they are in the best condition possible. Finally, take the necessary measurements of the ceiling to come up with desired patterns of the timber beams.

The Installation Process

You need to properly assemble the timber beams before installing them on the ceiling. For better assembling, you may label the different parts of timber beams for proper identification. In addition, take measurements and clearly mark any pieces of timber beams that need to be cut to perfectly fit on the ceiling.  Make accurate cuts on a mitre saw, and double-check individual pieces of the timber beam. Next, proceed by placing the first piece of wood on the assembly table and applying wood glue on the interlocking edge to connect with the next piece of timber beam. Do this for all other pieces and join them ensuring they fit snugly. When complete, wipe out any excess glues that come out of the timber joints.

For proper finishing, use sandpaper to scrab the joining edges of the timber beams to ensure that they fit properly.
